General News: Train Incident Raises Alarms
|
The bicycle after it was hit by the train. |
Multiple police, fire and rescue units responded to the riverfront near the Cornwall Yacht Club around 11 p.m. Tuesday night after a train engineer called police to report striking something on the track.
Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard said that the engineer heard two thumps and saw something out of the corner of his eye as he drove his train north. Hazard said the engineer stopped the train to look at what he had hit, thinking it might have been a deer, when he saw a bicycle on the track. That sight worried the engineer and he called police.
Hazard said that he called in a helicopter and a rescue boat from the Newburgh fire department. Together with units from the village police, Storm King Fire Engine Co. #2, Highland Engine Company, and COVAC, the area was searched for any sign of an injured person. “We scoured the area,” Hazard said, “and found nothing.”
The engineer told police that kids are always leaving things on the train tracks. The police took the mangled bicycle to its property storage room.
