General News: Town Orders Pool Leak Repair
|
The town pool has been closed since June 30. |
The Cornwall town board voted Monday night to repair the leak at the town pool at a cost of $13,500.
Town supervisor Kevin Quigley asked the board to take action because he felt the pressure of dissatisfied residents who spoke out at last week’s meeting when the closing of the town pool was discussed. A number of residents expressed their dismay that the pool had closed just two days after it had opened.
Quigley told the board he’d like to resolve the issue sooner rather than later, “before they’re ready to put me under water.”
Quigley said the leak, which caused the water level to drop 18 inches in a couple of days, was in the water return valves. The repair work will cut out sections of concrete, allowing workers to access and repair the plumbing beneath the pool edge. The concrete casings will then be replaced.
It is expected that the repair work can be completed within a week. Meanwhile, town residents with pool passes will be allowed to use the pool at the New York Military Academy, which is being staffed by town life guards.
The pool, which was built in the early 1950s, was repaired last summer as well, former Cornwall supervisor Richard Randazzo noted this past weekend. Randazzo said he left office at the end of 2007 believing that the pool was in good running order.
