General News: 4th of July Fundraising
By Brendan Coyne
Cornwall Independence Day Committee Chair
The Cornwall Independence Day Committee has begun fundraising to cover the expenses of the celebration Friday, July 4. The celebration costs more than $30,000. Last year, the committee spent $5,000 more than it took due to rain.
The fireworks are the biggest expense and this year the committee has budgeted $12,000. The next largest expense is the parade, with bands costing about $7,000. The celebration provides activities and entertainment all day and night leading up to the fireworks. These festivities cost approximately $5,000. Other expenses include the infrastructure to make everything run.
Much of the funding comes through donations from Cornwall residents and businesses. Solicitation letters are being sent and journal ads are being sought. Individuals and businesses will have a limited amount of time to make donations and place ads to meet the journal deadline.
The committee will run two raffles this year. One features a first prize of four Yankees tickets, courtesy of Bill Larkin’s law firm; the prize is worth more than a $1,000 and tickets are $5 each. The other raffle features three Cornwall restaurants and tickets are $1 or six for $5.
Another major fundraiser is the coin drop that takes place at dusk. Coordinator Jim Niblo is looking for volunteers for the drop. He can be reached at 534-8207. The committee also sells T-shirts, loop-a-lites, water and soda. To help, call fundraising coordinator Greg Whalen (534-2177).
Donations may be sent to: CIDC, P.O. Box 542, Cornwall, NY 12518. Visit the Cornwall Independence Committee website at www.cornwall4th.org for more details.
