General News: Petraeus Tapped for Centcom

Village native General David Petraeus has been nominated by President Bush to serve as the new chief of the U.S. Central Command, the Pentagon announced on Wednesday.
Petraeus has been serving as the top military commander of forces in Iraq for the past 15 months, where he oversaw a troop surge that has achieved some increased security in the country.
As head of the U.S. Central Command, four-star General Petraeus would oversee forces in both Irag and Afghanistan.
Robert Gates, the secretary of Defense, praised Petraeus when announcing impending appointment. "I don't know anybody in the U.S. military better qualified to lead that effort," he said.
