CORNWALL NY, NOVEMBER 7—Election season is in full swing, and local candidates Carla Castillo and Bill Braine, seeking Council member seats on the Town Board, are hard at work visiting homes across Town to hear residents’ concerns and to offer a fresh perspective.
“Cornwall is a unique place, blessed with natural beauty and hardworking people,” said Mr. Braine. “What we’re hearing on front porches around town is that we have challenges from population decline to loss of control over our water resources, but we also have big opportunities.”
Ms. Castillo said “Our town’s history of conservation, small business, and public service gives us the tools we need to create a more economically vibrant and livable Cornwall for all residents. We can all join together for Cornwall’s future.”
The two candidates have been involved in local issues for several years, from Mr. Braine’s involvement in the Cornwall Community Co-Op to Ms. Castillo’s dynamic work starting recycling programs at Lee Road Elementary and the Middle School and obtaining grants for conservation projects. Both lead Town committees: Carla chairs the Conservation Advisory Council while Bill chairs the Economic Development Advisory Committee. Ms. Castillo also serves on the Comprehensive Plan Committee, a match for her credentials as Senior Planner at the Hudson Valley Regional Council. “I have worked with municipal governments my whole career, and I love to build partnerships that solve problems,” said Ms. Castillo, who holds a Master’s Degree in Planning from the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Braine is a Director at Mastercard, where he has worked for 10 years in marketing and in managing products for small businesses. “Strengthening opportunities for local business investment, starting on Main Street, is one way to make Cornwall more resilient and self-reliant,” said Mr. Braine. “We’re already facing change. It’s time for us to choose the change we want.” He leads the development of the Cornwall Rising proposal, currently in concept and planning stages through the Economic Development Advisory Committee.
Both candidates have children in the Cornwall schools, and each has been endorsed by the Hudson Catskill Central Labor Council AFL-CIO and the Working Families Party, plus the Cornwall Democratic Committee and the Latino Democratic Committee of Orange County. They are running on the top row of your ballot with returning Democratic Supervisor Richard Randazzo, with Virginia Scott for County Legislature, and the rest of the County Democratic ticket. They encourage voters to hit the polls November 7 and elect “Leadership for Cornwall’s Future.”
