General News: New Film Lecture Series Debuts
New Film Lecture Series Debuts at Cornwall Public Library
CORNWALL, NY – The Cornwall Public Library is introducing a new film lecture series, Modern China through Film. The series will explore 20th century China through its cinematic representation by Chinese who lived through or reflected back on the tumultuous and tragic events of their revolutionary history. There will be films and short literary works keyed to each era and audience discussions will focus on cultural aspects of dialogue in the film and the Chinese representations of cultural, social and political change.
The series will be presented by Dr. Lan Jiang, Vice President of the Orange County Chinese Association, a non-profit whose mission is to provide cultural and educational programs to promote the Chinese cultural heritage in Orange County. There will be a new film and discussion every month through April. The first seminar on Wednesday, November 11th at 5:30pm features the topic War-Torn China. The film, “The Children of Huang Shi”, is a moving portrayal of one journalist’s heroic attempts to save orphaned children from the Sino-Japanese war. The film will be followed by a brief lecture: “Catastrophe, Surviving and the Way Humans are meant to Live: 1931-1945.” The seminars will be conducted in English and all movies have English subtitles.
This program is a drop-in event, no registration required. For more information about this program, please contact the library at 845-534-8282 and speak to Charlotte Dunaief or contact her at [email protected].
