CORNWALL, NY – On Sunday, April 26, the Cornwall Public Library was pleased to recognize several young people whose original poems were named best in Cornwall Public Library’s Annual Timothy Mumford Memorial Poetry Competition. The competition is held every year in memory of Tim Mumford, a Cornwall graduate who was a talented artist and writer. All of the winners were present and read their poems to an appreciative audience, after which they received their awards during a special ceremony that took place at 3:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. All received a personalized note and a prize for their efforts. Following the ceremony, everyone enjoyed a reception hosted by the Friends of Cornwall Public Library.
Over 140 original poems submitted by 121 people ages 5-18 were read and critiqued by three independent judges: Randall Enos, Margaret Hack and Kris Karaban, who had no knowledge of the authors other than their ages. The judges then conferred with one another to arrive at a unanimous decision regarding best poem in each age category, and best overall poem.
The 2015 winners are:
Ages 5-6 – Aaron Lewinson, “Motorcycle”
Ages 7-9 – Grace Leake, “Smile”
Ages 10-12 – Anna Christi Bennett, “the traveler”
Age 13-15 – Elizabeth Anne Klosky, “Landscapes”
Age 16-18– Tara Mannion, “Crooked Walls”
Best Overall Poem – Caroline Snider, “Steed”
