High School Musical Theatre Showcase
Orange County Arts Council presents High School Musical Theatre Showcase
Sugar Loaf, NY –The Orange County Arts Council is proud to host the first High School Musical Theatre Showcase in the Lower Level Center Court at the Galleria at Crystal Run in Middletown on Saturday, March 1st from 3:00pm to 6:30pm.
Seven high schools will be singing, dancing and strutting their stuff as they share a small sample of their upcoming high school musicals with each other and the general public. Dawn Ansbro, Executive Director for the Orange County Arts Council, said “The county-wide student art show sponsored by the Arts Council was such a huge success last year that we decided we needed to add an event for the performing arts this year. We sent out some inquiries to see if the schools were interested and were thrilled to get such an enthusiastic response. These students are so talented - I’m really looking forward to seeing so many of them performing in one place.”
Middletown High School will be performing selections from the contemporary musical In the Heights, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes. The story is set over the course of three days, involving an ensemble cast of characters in the largely Dominican-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. The complete show can be seen at Middletown High School on April 4th at 2pm and April 5th at 2pm and 8pm.
Warwick Valley High School will be performing selections from the whodunit musical Curtains, book by Rupert Holmes, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander. The musical is a spoof of backstage murder mystery plots, set in 1959 Boston, and follows the fallout when the supremely untalented star of Robbin' Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call. The complete show can be seen at Warwick Valley High School on March 7th at 7:30pm and March 8th at 2pm and 7:30pm.
Valley Central High School will perform selections from the classic musical Crazy For You, book by Ken Ludwig, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and music by George Gershwin. The show follows the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930's playboy, whose dream in life is to dance. It's a high energy comedy which includes mistaken identity, plot twists, and fabulous dance numbers. The full musical can be seen at Valley Central High School on April 4th and April 5th at 7pm and April 6th at 2pm.
Washingtonville High School will perform selections from the fun and high energy musical, Bye Bye Birdie, book by Michael Stewart, lyrics by Lee Adams, and music by Charles Strouse. The story is set in 1958 and was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957. The show can be seen in its entirety at Washingtonville High School on March 6th, March 7th and March 8th at 7pm.
Newburgh Free Academy will be performing selections from the Romeo and Juliet-inspired musical West Side Story, book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and conception and choreography by Jerome Robbins. This is a romantic story about two star-crossed lovers and explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The entire musical can be seen at Newburgh Free Academy on March 21st and March 22nd at 7:30pm and March 23rd at 2:30pm.
John S. Burke Catholic High School will be performing selections from the musical Godspell, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by John-Michael Tebelak. The show is composed of various musical parables from The Gospel According to Matthew and uses contemporary music and dance to tell the story of Jesus Christ. The musical can be seen in its entirety at Burke Catholic High School on April 11th and April 12th at 7:30pm and April 13th at 2pm.
Port Jervis High School will be performing selections from the hit movie-inspired musical Footloose, music by Tom Snow, lyrics by Dean Pitchford and Kenny Loggins, and book by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie. The story features classic 80’s anthems and revolves around a rebellious teenager who moves to a small middle-American town where dance is forbidden, and encourages his classmates to defy the local pastor and call for a rock 'n 'roll prom. Call Port Jervis High School for dates and times.
