Obituaries: Hurshell A. Walker

February 12, 2014

Staff Sgt. Hurshell A. Walker USAF of New Windsor, NY passed away Friday, February 7, 2014 at St. Lukes Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh, NY. He was 84 years old.

Born December 22, 1929 in Ridge View, WV, he was the son of Fannie Blanche and Raymond Walker.

Hurshell was a Retired Machinist with Star-Expansion in Mountainville, NY. He proudly served in the USAF from 1951-1965.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Wright Walker at home; brother, Harold; half brother, Edward; half sisters, Beth, Pam and Virginia; sons, Hurshell Jr. (partner, Jennifer), John (wife, Elizabeth), James (wife, Lucy); grandchildren, Carolyn, Andrew, Grace, Nicole, Erika, Katelin, Gwendolyn and Benjamin.

A family statement read: "He proudly served his country in Japan and Korea and also did two tours of duty in Vietnam. After spending 14 years in the military, he chose to leave the Air Force to be with his family. He was a man of quiet strength who with patience and love raised his sons and delighted in his grandchildren. Planting in his vast garden, most especially his famous "poppy's tomatoes", which he sold on a wagon in his front yard on the honor system, and riding his beloved Wheel Horse tractor was his idea of a perfect day! He also leaves the loving legacy of so many friends and their families who filled our back yard since our children's generation to now our children's childrens generation."

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on February 14, 2014 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520.

A Funeral Service will be at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, any contributions can be made to the VA at Castle Point in Wappinger Falls, New York, 12590 or Bethlehem Church, 1520 Rt.94, New Windsor, New York 12553.

Arrangements are by Kevin Quigley of Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. To send condolences or directions to the funeral home, please go to: www.quigleybros.com.
