Helen Syndergaard, age 99, passed away on October 26, 2012, at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh, NY. Helen was born on May 14, 1913, in Pipestone, MN, and resided in the Midwest most of her life. She was one of the early teachers who taught in a one-room country school. She enjoyed teaching for many years in Minnesota.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Gerhardt (“Gay”) Abraham, in 1978. They owned a small trucking company and later he and Helen purchased and operated a Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Barron, Wisconsin. She was also predeceased by her second husband, Edward Syndergaard, with whom she shared an active retirement until his death in 2002.
She is survived by her daughter Beverly Abraham (Chris Olander) and three sons, Gary Abraham (Barbara), Jim Abraham (Patty), and Ron Abraham (Connie). She is also survived by seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two stepsons, Larry Syndergaard and John Syndergaard (Nancy), one stepdaughter, Mary Bisek (Clarence), and nine step grandchildren.
More than anything else in her life, she was pleased and grateful that her extended family so loved her and each other.
For the past nine years, Helen lived at the Johne’s Home in Newburgh. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on November 2, 2012, at Union Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Union Church, 44 Balmville Road, Newburgh, NY 12550.
