Under a clear blue sky on Saturday morning, the 62nd season of Cornwall Little League was launched with hundreds of eager players who marched from town hall to the playing fields, excitement brimming at every step.
The youngest players, age five, followed behind the Storm King Fire Engine Company Color Guard, clutching their team banners as they walked. Mothers, fathers and other supporters lined the sidewalks, taking photos of the young players in their clean uniforms.
At the ball field, more than a dozen local elected leaders stood along the first base line to cheer the young players on. Across the field, nearly two dozen of the adult volunteers who run the Little League operations greeted the crowd.
Officials Recognize Little League's Contribution
The ceremony started solemnly, with the raising of the American flag by SKFE #2 and members of the American Legion Post 352. The Cornwall Singers under the direction of Valerie Ransbottom sang a lovely a capella version of the national anthem.
After John Carnright, the president of the Cornwall Little League, opened the ceremony, state Senator Bill Larkin presented a resolution from the NY State Senate honoring the league for “being a guiding light to the youth of Cornwall.” Orange County Legislator Kevin Hines said he was a product of Little League and Cornwall Supervisor Kevin Quigley agreed that the league is one of the best things Cornwall has to offer. The speeches wrapped up with Cornwall-on-Hudson Mayor Brendan Coyne leading the crowd to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
Before the season could officially begin, two district 19 pennant flags were retired. The Major League Baseball team and the 9-and 10-year old’s Softball Team had both won the title in 2011 and, judging by the enthusiasm of the young players, many hoped that they would be winners in 2012.
Five League Leaders Added to Honor Roll
This year, five of the volunteers who have held leadership roles in Cornwall Little League were recognized for their service. Lynn and Lana Beesecker, Nick and Peggy Visconti and Ben Perro were awarded plaques that put them on the Honor Roll 2012. Each of them had held a variety of positions in the league, some for as long as 18 years. Lynn Beesecker is currently the league vice president and Lana runs the concession stand with Pam Farrell. Nick and Peggy Visconti served various positions until this year, Peggy as the league secretary. Ben Perro is the league treasurer.
The opening day ceremony would not be complete without the first balls being pitched from the mound to home plate and this year five children representing t-ball, softball and baseball lined up to cast the ceremonial pitches into the awaiting gloves of league officials.
From there, it was time to head home or to the concession stand while a lucky few stayed at the fields to play the first games of the season on the fields.
