1. Why are you running for a position as library trustee?
I'm running because this library meets so many public needs that it's ability to grow - which it must do - must be encouraged and supported by everyone. You never know when you're going to need to fax, copy or research something quickly that vital. There's a book you must read right away. Magazines and newspapers must be read so you can find out key results but they're all sold out at the store. And so it goes every day at this wonderful library. As a library trustee I'll be able to push for as much help as the library needs and make use of new aid such as the $50,000 targeted foundation goal just underway.
2. Why do you think that you can make a difference in the library's future?
I can make a difference because I've got a stake and can appreciate the broad range of motives others have for using this library - kids need itf or school, for instance, now that the school district has had to make cutbacks in so many areas. Also, after years in the reading and writing business, I see how key the library is to me and others who depend on it for research, inter-library loans, news and just a break from everyday pressures.
So I've got motive to help. Plus, I have managed small teams of newspaper reporters whose resources were often limited by money and time. So I have practice in aiming at goals and seeing them through.
3. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm a 26-year veteran bureau chief, general assignment reporter, columnist and now freelancer for the Times Herald-Record. My newspaper resume includes investigations of corruption in Newburgh, roles as a staff mentor, and now as a free-lance nature columnist, all for the Record. I have covered the U.S, Military Academy at West Point and was given a bronze medallion for coverage by the post commander.
I was graduated from Brooklyn College with a BA in history, and attended Columbia University, where I took courses in journalism and history. I live in Cornwall-on-Hudson right by the Hudson River, where I kayak and wander. I served 7 1/2 years in the U.S. Army reserves and six months active duty. I am a target archer, member of Delta Psi fraternity and the Edgar A. Mearns Bird Club.
