Obituaries: Rita Josephine Mattingly O'Neill

March 27, 2012

Rita Josephine Mattingly O'Neill, 88, passed away March 24, 2012 at her daughter's home in Montclair, VA. She was born on September 14, 1923 to Agnes and Walter Mattingly in Zanesville, Ohio. A dedicated and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother aka "Grammy "O", neighbor and friend. Pre-deceased by husband, William T. O'Neill and sister, Dolores Finan.

Her early career and marriage to an Air Force Officer gave her the opportunity to live in France, Germany and Italy post World War II. Ultimately settling in Cornwall, New York, where she raised five children. A devoted member of the Catholic Church, most especially to the parish of St. Thomas of Canterbury in Cornwall on the Hudson, NY. Rita took great pride in the community of Cornwall, the Church and most importantly her children. She always had a positive attitude, was a guiding light and a pillar of strength to her family, friends and community.

She leaves five children, eleven grandchildren, and four sons and daughters-in-law. Survived by son, Shawn P. O'Neill of Boston, MA; daughter, Michelle O'Neill McNicholas of Philadelphia, PA and husband, David and daughters, Elissa and Monica; son, William T. O'Neill of Groton MA and wife, Lisa and children, McCullough and Jack; daughter, Patty O'Neill Tedesco of Montclair, VA and husband, Mark and children, Marcus, Thomas, Rebecca and Amanda; daughter, Sheila M. Bridges of Manassas, VA and husband, Mike and children, Caitlin, Jared and Rachael.

Friends may call at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home 337 Hudson Street Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 30. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson, Saturday, March 31st at 10 a.m. Burial will follow Mattingly Settlement in Nashport, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Catholic Charities and Capital Caring Hospice, Manassas, VA or hospice in your local area.
