Audrey Hall.
February 15, 2012

Audrey Hall, 82, died peacefully at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Elant Nursing Care Center at Goshen.

She was a well-known Hudson Valley artist, creating highly successful pastoral scenes and home interiors often sold at art galleries here and New York City.

She leaves many friends and family. Her husband Wayne Hall is a free-lance writer for the Times Herald-Record and other publications.  “She often told me,” he said, “that happiness is being married to your best friend. Audrey was a marvelous human being.” They were together for 42 years.

Mrs. Hall was for several years the art curator of the Museum of the Hudson Highlands, now called the Nature Museum of the Hudson Highlands. She was graduated from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art and the Performing Arts in New York City as well as Cooper Union School of Art. She belonged to the Garrison Art Center, Garrison, N.Y. and Barrett House in Poughkeepsie..

She won many awards for her artwork and ran a Cornwall-on-Hudson art gallery she called. “The Studio.” At one opening night she sold 21 paintings in minutes. In addition, she was for many years a successful fabric designer in New York City.  An accomplished musician, she played piano at home almost every night. Bach was her favorite. When she was 12 she won a medal at a Carnegie Hall piano contest. It was presented to her by the late actress Elsa Lancaster.

Blessed with a quick wit and warm heart, she made many friends. She loved travel – Venice was her favorite destination.

A fighter, she tried until the last to recover from a large stroke suffered July 14, 2007. But she was overcome by an apparent subsequent stroke recently.

A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Daughter Claudia Schwalb is a successful artist in New York City. Granddaughter Heather Schwalb is a musician and artist and is graduating high school.
Condolences may be sent to Wayne Hall, 10 Shore Road, Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, NY 12520. Cremation was arranged by Kevin Quigley of Quigley Brothers Funeral Home, Cornwall-on-Hudson. .
