General News: Village Votes to Give Up Tax Assessment Unit
February 14, 2012
By Charlie B. Scirbona
The village board voted to abolish its status as a tax assessment unit during a special meeting, Monday
The board first touched upon merging its assessment duties with the town in November after it could not get enough volunteers to sit on a tax assessment review board. The county had to be called in to handle tax grievances submitted by the village residents.
The unanimous vote followed a public hearing that drew no comments.
Village Mayor Brendan Coyne said the change was needed not just because the village couldn’t seat assessment review board, but because there wasn’t much of a difference in getting an adjustment in an assessment between the village and town.
Village Trustee Andrew Argenio said he thought abolishing the review board was a step towards consolidation of the town and village.
