General News: Teen Talks About the Modern Slave Trade
January 12, 2012
A high school senior from Washingtonville will give a presentation Tuesday evening in Cornwall-on-Hudson about the international trafficking of women and children, a practice that has been dubbed the modern slave trade.
Lena Cheney first became aware of the issue two years ago when, as a high school sophomore, she took part in a conference that was part of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York. Motivated to learn more, and to share what she is learning with others, Cheny conducted her own independent research into the worldwide practice and will present her findings in a talk on Tuesday evening at 7 pm at The Grail in Cornwall-on-Hudson as the first presentation of a new series called Conversations from A Global Perspective.
Her talk will include a slide show and video that include first-hand stories of the reality of women and children whose lives have been altered by the traffickers. Cheny’s goal is to raise awareness of this devastating issue and to give people an understanding of its pervasiveness throughout the world, along with information about how to combat it.
Cheny intends to pursue her interest in international affairs both in college and through international experiences, some of them through the international network of Grail members who work on similar issues around the world.
