Obituaries: Barbara Jean Merritt

Barbara Jean Merritt, of Newburgh, entered into rest on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at home. She and her husband owned Merritt Florist, which they established in 1955. She was 81.
Daughter of the late Welcome and Winifred Greene Clarke, she was born on March 22, 1930 in Hornell, NY. On June 8, 1952, she married Thurl Merritt, who survives and lives in Newburgh.
Barbara attended elementary and high school in Ovid, NY and also attended Cornell University. She was a past member of the Cornwall School Board and PTA; and was active with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was also active for many years in various roles at Union Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her loving husband, Thurl, of 59 years, she is survived by her children, Robin Prokosch of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Craig Merritt of San Francisco, CA and Glenn Merritt of Olympia, WA; grandchildren: Marjorie Prokosch of Miami, FL, Matthew Merritt and Kyle Merritt, both of Olympia, WA, Jan Patowski, Judy Clarke and Paul Clarke; brother-in-law, Roger Merritt of Cornwall-on-Hudson; sister, Pamela Donato of New Windsor; nieces and nephews: James Merritt, Susan Merritt, Peter Merritt, Christopher Donato and Kelly Galeas.
Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Newburgh. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at Union Presbyterian Church, Newburgh. Contributions in Barbara's memory may be made to your favorite cause.
