General News: Taylor Biomass Agreement On Hold in Town
October 04, 2011
The town of Cornwall is putting on hold its plans to sign up for solid waste removal with Taylor Biomass pending the outcome of an environmental review. Town attorney Stephen Gaba told the board that the decision last month by the state Supreme court to revoke the project's environmental review and subsequent permits for the property, including the site plan approval, building permit and Department of Environmental Conservation waste operation permit raises issues about the plant.
“The court decision has interjected a lot of uncertainty about how the project is going to go forward,” Gaba told the board on Monday evening. “We will see how the zoning goes forward and how SEQRA (an environmental review) will shake out.”
Both the town and the village, along with municipalities throughout Orange County, have been considering signing a 20-year agreement with the state-of-the-art facility that is designed to turn solid waste into energy that had been scheduled to go online in early 2013.
