General News: Village, Town to Seek Bids for Trash Disposal

The village and town of Cornwall decided Monday to solicit bids for garbage disposal services instead of signing up with Taylor Biomass of Montgomery, which had been soliciting municipalities throughout Orange County to sign exclusively with it for a 20-year contract.
Village Mayor Brendan Coyne said that the idea of putting a waste disposal contract out to bid had been talked about when he met representatives of other municipalities last month to discuss the Taylor Biomass contract. Village Trustee Andrew Argenio had also voiced concern about not putting the contract out to bid.
Since Taylor Biomass first put out proposals to the village and town, it’s been found that another group in Orange County, Slate Hill Biomass Energy, could provide the same kind of service. Town Attorney Steven Gaba said other towns like Walden, Montgomery and New Windsor have also decided to solicit competing bids.
Through the bid process the village will list a request for bids for waste disposal services and give any interested parties 10 calendar days to respond.
