General News: Teen Dies in Accident on Saturday AM
August 27, 2011
An early morning traffic accident on Route 32 claimed the life of a New Windsor teen on Saturday. Cornwall police report that Devon Johnson, 18, was the only occupant of the 2001 Hyundai he was driving north on Route 32 near Ardmore Place when he veered off the right side of the road, overcorrected and skidded into the path of a southbound 2010 Toyota driven by Mary Valladares, 30, of Newburgh.
Police and emergency personnel responded to the accident shortly after 4:15 am. Members of the Vails Gate Fire Department extricated the victims from the vehicles and COVAC and Transcare provided patient care. Johnson was transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital where he died of his injuries. Valladares was taken to St. Francis Hospital.
Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard said that Johnson, a 2010 graduate of Cornwall Central High School, is the son of Ebony and Shawn Johnson. The investigation is on-going, Hazard said, adding that the victim had come home around 2:30 in the morning and, for an unknown reason, gone out again. He was apparently returning home when the accident occurred, he said.
