(Sarah) Elizabeth Stevens Thorne, our mother and friend, died July 5, 2011, a life-long resident of Newburgh/New Windsor. She was born July 23, 1920, daughter of Alonzo W. and Sarah Elizabeth (McNeil) Stevens in Newburgh, NY. She graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and worked locally at the French Pastry Bakery and Welfare Department.
She married her high school sweetheart, Charles Rhodes Thorne, on February 24, 1946 when he returned home from the Army. Her beloved husband predeceased her on January 18, 2005.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Dorothy Blesse of UT, Ruth (Vincent) Gordon of New Windsor, NY and Barbara (Timothy) Diamond of NC. She loved her family unconditionally, especially her grandchildren, Barbara Whittaker, Cherie Kilpatrick, Heather Reed, Matthew Blesse, Michelle Kearney and Kevin Gordon. She has 10 great-grandchildren, Kaylynn, Dylan, Adrianna, Britni, Shaun, Erinn, Robert, Nicole, Tyler and Sarah and one great-great grandchild, Lancer. She is survived by several sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and a cousin.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, sister and best friend , Dorothy Cooper and brothers, Alonzo, Ralph, Donald, Elmer and Robert Stevens. She was also pre-deceased by her beloved son-in-law, Frederick Blesse.
She was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church for 65 years where she served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and pal to many Pioneer Girls. We take comfort in knowing she had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She enjoyed growing flowers. She also loved taking care of children which she did for grandchildren and several local families.
The family wishes to extend gratitude to Hospice of Orange and the staff at Elant, Newburgh. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange or Deacons Fund at Bethlehem Church.
Graveside services will be at Bethlehem Cemetery, Corner of Route 94 & Jackson Ave, New Windsor, NY Friday, July 8, 2011 at 10:00 am. Pastor Jose Rodriguez from Goodwill Presbyterian Church will officiate. Funeral Services provided by Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, Inc., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.
