General News: Minor Softball Team Wins District 19 Title
July 09, 2011
The Cornwall Little League softball field was a buzz with activity on Thursday evening when the 9- and 10-year-olds girls minor softball team won the District 19 championship, returning the banner to Cornwall for another year.
The Cornwall team defeated Warwick by a margin of 9-to-8, helped by a major hit by 9-year-old Megan Sanches who, according to one observer, “hit the ball all the way to the fence, blasting it and driving in three runs.”
Sanchez had three hits and drove in a total of four rounds. Alexa Siler, who just returned from the disabled list after breaking her arm last spring, got two hits, as did Lexi Zamparelli. Madison Mozgiel was the winning pitches, striking out eight batters.
The team will play again on Tuesday, this time for the Section Four Tournament title against an undetermined team from Dutchess County.
