Obituaries: Shirley A. (Sandy) Handforth

Shirley A. (Sandy) Handforth of Cornwall entered into rest on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Rosary Hill Home, Hawthorne, NY. She was 75.
The daughter of the late Felix and Alberta McCaffery, she was born on July 25, 1935 in Greenport, Long Island.
Shirley was a member of Cornwall Baptist Church for over 20 years and a choir member. She was an A.W.A.N.A. Leader, V.B.S. arts and crafts teacher, led kids J.O.Y. and was an assistant coach for the Yankees Girl softball Cinderella League. She was a Nurses Aide, an EMT for COVAC and the first woman auxiliary police officer in Cornwall.
Shirley was an artist who was offered a scholarship to Pratt Art Institute before she got married. She had art shows at Eisenhower Hall, West Point and used her talent in the community. She led childrens reading programs at C-O-H Library, using her artwork to illustrate. Her poetry has been published in the Cornwall Local.
Survivors include her seven children; Shannon, George and wife Jodi, Wendy, Laurel, Justin, Heather and Joshua; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter R. Kriste, her brother Robert McCaffery and an uncle, Clarence Merrill. She was married to William H. Handforth, Jr. from 1953-1979.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 26 from 5-7pm at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 27 at 10:00am at the funeral home. Pastor Stephen Racite will officiate. Interment will follow in Cornwall Baptist Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, friends may send a financial gift to help defer Shirley’s funeral expenses to Justin Handforth, 30 Gerow Lane, New Windsor, NY 12553.
