John S. Stillman, 91, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, died on January 19, 2010.
Stillman, a lawyer, was a government official in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and was known as a loyal Democrat and a warm, kind, gracious gentleman.
John Stillman was the son of Dr. Ernest Stillman, founder of Cornwall Hospital who also donated the land that is now Black Rock Forest.
He served as the chair of the Orange County Democratic Party for several years in the 1950s and 60s and was the chairman of the New York State Bridge Authority. In that role he pushed for the construction of a four-lane Beacon-Newburgh Bridge. He also served as treasurer of the Hudson River Valley Council (HRVC), an organization formed in 1971 to oppose the conversion and expansion of Stewart Air Force Base into Stewart Airport.
He was the beloved husband of Amelia and father of Nathaniel, John J., Linda, Whit, and Mark. Stillman leaves six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Maine in July. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Cornwall Hospital.
