Obituaries: James J. Hennessey, Sr.

James J. Hennessey Sr., a longtime resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson, died on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Arden Hill Hospital, Goshen.
Born in New York City, he was the son of the late John and Nellie Daly Hennessey.
James served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a retired 1st Grade Detective with over 20 years of service, and a member of the Honor Legion of the NYC Police Department. After his retirement, he was an Investigator for the Legal Aid Society in New York City, was Supervisor of Security for Lincoln Center and served as Special Investigator for the Ulster County Sheriff's Department.
He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in New York City and an active 3rd Degree member of Our Lady of Fatima of the Rosary Council at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Cornwall-on-Hudson. He was also a member of the New York City Police Department's Holy Name Society, the New York City Police Benevolent Association and New York City Detectives Endowment Association.
On April 28, 1951, he married Margaret O'Sullivan in New York City.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Margaret, at home; he was the loving and caring father of three sons: James Jr. of Albany, William and his wife, Merle of Newburgh and Kevin; three daughters: Judith White and her husband, James of Albany, Maureen Wallace and her husband, George Jr. of Cornwall-on-Hudson, and Jacqueline Taormina and her husband, Antonino of Montgomery; 14 cherished grandchildren: Jennifer Lynn, George III, Richard, Stephen James Wallace, Stephanie, Rachel and James White, Antonino James Jr., Alessandra, Julia Margaret, and Michael Daniel Taormina, William Patrick, Sean Michael and Holly Hennessey; and several devoted nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, David and John Hennessey, and sister, Eleanor Hennessey.
A family statement reads: "James was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a compassionate friend with a generous, kind heart and an Irish wit. He will be truly missed by his family and friends."
The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., today, Thursday, October 15, and Friday, October 16, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, at St. Patrick's Church, Newburgh; with Monsignor John Budwick and Reverend Daniel O'Hare officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, NY.
