H. Ned Shreve of Cornwall, N.Y., died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Cornwall Campus. He was 82.
He was born February 6th, 1927, in Erie, Pennsylvania. A veteran of World War II, Ned served 1945-1948 as Pharmacist’s Mate for the U.S. Navy on the USS Iowa and the USS Bremerton and the at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. After receiving an honorable discharge, Ned attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Eventually, he became a news broadcaster with WALL (then, Middletown) and WGNY, Newburgh. He held the position of Director of Public Relations in the New York State Department of Labor under Governor Nelson Rockefeller for fourteen years and continued working in the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. when Rockefeller became Vice-President. Citicorp then hired Ned as Vice President and Director of Public Affairs, where he worked until his retirement.
Locally, Ned was a consultant for McQuade Children’s Services in New Windsor and served as President of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Hudson Highlands (now the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum) for eleven years. He often contributed his vocal talent as narrator of the annual Fourth of July pageant in Cornwall.
Ned is survived by his wife, Dorothy B. Shreve, their son, Randy Shreve, of New York, daughter, Wendy Shreve, of Orleans, MA, and Randy’s wife, Kathy, and their daughter, Lara, of Jacksonville, FL.
