General News: Boy Finds Cash in Garbage, Hands It In
|
Jesse DeTeresa |
June 13, 2008
A 12-year-old boy in the village had a big surprise recently when he looked into a trash can outside of Cumberland Farms in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
Jesse DeTeresa, a sixth-grader at Cornwall Central Middle School, was throwing his empty soda cup away when he saw a pile of $50 bills and other cash in the trash. Without giving it much thought, Jesse says he picked up the money and brought it to the store manager. He later learned it totaled $500.
“Afterwards my friends said, ‘why’d you give it away? We could have spent it,’” Jesse recalls. He says he never considered keeping it.
Soon, Jesse’s mother learned that the man who lost the money was looking for her son and she got nervous, thinking that the cash might have been connected to the drug trade. Her fears subsided when she learned that the man, an employee of a local business, merely wanted to give Jesse a reward.
“I was really proud of him,” Mel DeTeresa says. “You read a lot about the bad things kids do, but a lot of them know how to do the right thing.”

Wow! You did the right thing young man. WELL DONE! Sadly - too many think the way your friends thought. You should be very proud of yourself. Thank you for being a fine upstanding young man. (No it wasn't my money.) Just want to give praise where its well deserved.

In my 50+ years, I've lost my wallet or purse several times - and I've always had it returned to me, with all the cash, etc. intact. There are a great deal of good, upstanding people in the world and we don't hear enough about them. Thanks for writing about Jesse - we need to hear more about the good, honest people in our communities and world. I'm glad Jesse was given a reward - he deserves it. We need to all encourage each other to be the best people we can be.

Kudos to Jesse for doing the right thing? But, I am curious, how did so much money end up in the garbage in the first place?

Pretty special that this young man considered his options and took it upon himself to do the right thing. Thank you for setting such a fine example for your peers and I hope you make the front page of the newspaper!! Barbara Gosda

The Oculator learned that the owner had just been paid in cash at his place of work and had crossed the street to the Cumberland Farms for a snack. He mistakenly tossed his money in with the trash he had in his hand.
