Obituaries: Josephine McGuinness

Josephine McGuinness, a longtime resident of Cornwall, NY passed away on January 30, 2017, at home in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY where she lived with her son and his family for the last seven years of her life. She was 93.
She was born on December 10, 1923 in Northvale, NJ, the daughter of Joseph Appendino and Ceasarina Ostino Appendino. She was married to Patrick J. McGuinness, Jr. on February 4, 1950 who predeceased her on February 18, 2005.
Josephine was a retired registered nurse. She graduated from nursing school at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ, and when she got married and moved to Cornwall, NY, she worked at Cornwall Hospital and Keller Army Hospital, West Point, NY, during her career. She was a devoted and faithful member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY and went to Mass on a daily basis well into her 80’s, driving herself to church. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters - Court Rita of the same parish. Josephine loved reading all kinds of health, medical and religious books, doing daily Sudoku puzzles and playing chess with her grandchildren. She will be missed for her spirited religious debates as well as her devotion to God and the unborn. She loved and was very proud of the accomplishments of all her grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, Patrick J. McGuinness, III and his wife, Lorraine, of Cornwall-on Hudson, NY and Anne M. Ferris and her husband, John, of Cornwall, NY; her grandchildren, Meghan L. McGuinness- Risano and her husband, Brendon, of Newburgh, NY; Patrick H. McGuinness of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY; John M. Ferris, Jr. of Cornwall, NY and Kathryn R. Ferris of Cornwall, NY; her sisters Theresa Carr of Orlando, FL and Margaret Carlson and her husband Kenneth of Orlando, FL; her in-law’s, Betty McGuinnes of Port Richey, FL and brother-in-law Donald Terry of New London, CT; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, John Appendino, and sister, Mary Appendino.
Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall on Hudson, NY. Josephine’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 6, 2017 at St. Thomas of Canterbury R.C. Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall, NY immediately following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in her name.
