From the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department
During the week of Sunday, January 31, 2016 through Saturday, February 06, 2016, several Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., residents report receiving telephone calls on either their home phones or their personal cell phones from a male subject with a foreign accent, possibly of Indian descent, advising them that they were calling from the Department of Treasury/ Internal Revenue Service and that they were in arrears on their taxes and if they didn’t make the necessary payment immediately they would be brought in front of a Court Magistrate. Most of the victim’s immediately “hung- up” the telephone and others report the unknown male caller would advise them to make payments via moneygram/ wire transfer and/or paypal type payment.
Cornwall-on-Hudson residents are reminded that this is not the regular protocol the Department of Treasury/ Internal Revenue Service follows when someone is delinquent on their taxes, The Internal Revenue Service conducts direct mail correspondence if someone is in arrears on their taxes for notification purposes.
Residents are advised to immediately “hang- up” the telephone if they receive one of these “scam type” telephone calls and immediately report same to the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department.
