Summer Theatre Program Produces Holiday Favorite: Elf, Jr., The Musical to Debut at Walter Reade, Jr. Theatre
Step It Up Performing Arts in Cornwall-on-Hudson, home of Step It Up Summer Stage, will be presenting the first regional licensed version of Elf, Jr. The Musical Saturday December 19th at 7pm and Sunday, December 20th at 2pm at The Walter Reade, Jr. Theatre at Storm King School.
Directors Karen Eremin and T.J. Larke, along with producer Ronda Barber, were so proud of their casts in last summer’s two tremendously popular shows, Shrek, The Musical in July and Spring Awakening in August, that they began thinking about a holiday show in early August. Performance rights to Elf, Jr. were not made available until September 1st, so there was a scramble to create a new production formula, different than the company’s two-week full-time summer theatre intensive. Karen Eremin has always wondered why there weren’t more opportunities for kids to be part of a community holiday musical, and the answer soon became obvious. Between fall sports, clubs, college prep, back to school, dance, music lessons, scouts and religious studies, families were reluctant to add one more commitment to the weekly schedule. Still, twenty five intrepid students, aged 5-17 registered for the program and cannot wait to entertain friends and family next weekend with a musical comedy version of the classic Will Ferrell film Elf.
Step It Up’s rendition of Elf, Jr. is a shorter version of the same show presently playing at Madison Square Garden. It features musical direction of an eight piece orchestra by Ben Kohn of Washingtonville. Tickets for this show are priced at $10 and available to reserve and pick up at the Step by Step Dance Studio in COH by calling 534-3645.
