Update on Storm King Mountain:
Due to ongoing issues with 9W over Storm King Mountain between Cornwall and Highlands, and through the efforts of Stakeholders at the February 13, 2015 "Storm King Mountain Roundtable", we requested the installation of mile marker signs for motorists to help report the location of emergencies and request assistance (see photos).
It has been common practice for three agencies (Police/Fire/EMS) from three municipalities (Town of Cornwall/Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson/Town of Highlands) to be dispatched to the same call as motorists typically don't have reliable location information when reporting emergencies on Storm King Mountain. We hope that the new signs will help alleviate these issues. A copy of the memo sent to Stakeholders is attached and on the second page you will find a list of "Storm King Mountain Mile Markers".
Furthermore, the electronic Variable Messaging Board (VMB) currently located Southbound across from the Hospital will be placed adjacent to the Indian Point Siren once DOT improves the shoulder this season for stable placement. As you remember, the previous sign was located at the Bus Turn and was destroyed by a Hit-And-Run driver. Officer Michael Thompson brought that person to justice through very diligent Police work. The sign cost over $20k and restitution was made to NYS.
As we approach the Winter Season, we would like to remind motorists about some Winter driver safety tips, especially for those who travel Storm King Mountain. See attachment.
