General News: New Signs for Storm King

The Status of Storm King is a Facebook group created by Sue Petersen and Theresa Cornish. These two women decided to create a group for local residents to share and inform others on the road conditions of Storm King and 9W. Now, with over 2,000 members, including Assemblyman Skoufis, this group is becoming a forum for the possibility of posting an electric sign on 9W that will state road conditions on Storm King Mountain.
According to Emergency Manager, Kurt Hahn, the need for signs has been needed for a while. However, the “Status of Storm King” group brought much needed attention to the issue. On February 13th a “Storm King Mountain Roundtable” was held for Stakeholders and office officials, but it was not open to the public. The meeting was to discuss the need for multiple signs on and around Storm King Mountain for driver and first responder safety.
There have been multiple incidents on the five mile stretch when drivers aren’t sure where they are on the road. This causes both Cornwall’s and Highlands’ First Responders to take the call and be sure the incident is in their jurisdiction.
Pete Teliska, Regional Engineer for NYS DOT, has authorized the ordering of more prominent mile markers for drivers to reference in case of an emergency.
Efforts are already underway to post two, temporary, electronic signs on 9W to inform drivers of road conditions on Storm King. One sign will be placed Southbound in Cornwall, and the other will be placed northbound in Highlands.
The hope is that permanent electronic signs will be purchased and built for long term use, by next season. For now the temporary signs will be put up to get the ball rolling.
In the mean time, Emergency Manager, Kurt Hahn, urges readers to join the “Status of Storm King” Facebook Group for frequent road condition updates.
