General News: NYMA Affiliates with Obridge Academy

February 28, 2013

New York Military Academy Affiliates with Obridge Academy

(New York, NY) – Obridge Academy and the New York Military Academy announced today that the schools have formed an affiliation to help transform the 124 year-old New York Military Academy once again into a vibrant school, now focused on 21st Century leadership and global citizenship. The affiliation will provide for a blend of traditional military education coupled with contemporary education, while establishing a physical presence for Obridge Academy’s growing online learning institution.

Obridge Academy is a successful, premier learning institution focused on exceptional quality education for high school and middle school students. The New York Military Academy is a private co-educational college preparatory school in Cornwall, NY.

In 2010, the New York Military Academy faced closure, but through the efforts of the town and local investors, alumni, parents, faculty and staff the school was saved. At that time, the Board of Trustees developed a five-year plan to seek opportunities to grow and expand the school.

This affiliation will immediately bring additional resources to enhance students’ academic experience short  term and long term, without increasing 2013/2014 tuition rates. The name and mission of the New York  Military Academy will not change: be the premiere private, co-educational college preparatory school using military organization and traditions in the United States. David Penberg, interim Head of School for New York Military Academy, said: “Obridge Academy’s goal is to build on the traditions and community dedication of the New York Military Academy to ensure its ongoing contribution to the surrounding area. Blended learning, technology enrichment, summer internships and international exchange programs are some of the initiatives planned to broaden the educational opportunities of all students.”

“The New York Military Academy is grateful that Obridge plans to invest $20 million in the New York Military Academy over the next 5-7 years for the benefit of a long-term relationship,” said David Fields, President of the New York Military Academy Board of Directors. “This investment will include creating a green campus, significant capital improvements and expansion on the existing New York Military Academy land, adding new hires, and designing curriculum and extracurricular opportunities that reflect a globally connected world.”

In this affiliation, Obridge will serve as the Educational Management Organization (EMO) for the New York Military Academy, becoming a capital partner to lend educational management experience. The New York Military Academy will continue as an independent non-profit educational corporation that is governed by its Board of Trustees. However, some of the New York Military Academy Board members will transition off the Board and Obridge Academy has provided recommendations for qualified candidates to the Board of Trustees.

Comments:

NYMA has not yet finalized the deal with Obridge Academy. Aside from graduating three additional classes in 2011, 2012 and the upcoming class of 2013, the Academy is in the same position it was in in 2010. The primary difference being that there was a SOLID buyer in 2010. The financing provided by the lending syndicate in July of 2010 is due in July. Either the syndicate grants an extension or NYMA is again in dire straights if the deal with Obridge is not consummated. There is still an outstanding debt to a proffesional that has yet to be paid by the current board leading to laysuits being brought against all of the current Board of Trustees as well as members of the Executive Committee of the former Board of Trustees, despite a written promise from David Fields, current Pres. of the NYMA BOT and a letter from BOT treasurer Richard Gerlach stating ALL invoices had been paid.

I am surprised to hear a trustee from 2010 say "there was a SOLID buyer" in 2010.

According to the Superintendent, as quoted in this publication, the Academy was never even on the market. Were we mislead by the Board of Trustees?

NYMA Superintendent Says Property Is Not For Sale

NYMA?s superintendent Watts listened to the public comments then admonished the council and members of the public for talking about zoning changes when the property is not for sale. ?Unless it goes on the market,? he said, ?this conversation is inappropriate.?

I was not aware there was a "SOLID buyer" in 2010.

Since Mr. Judge was a member of the Executive committee in 2010, he certainly would know such things.

According to the Superintendent, as quoted in this publication, the Academy was NOT on the market.

Did Mr. Judge, as a member of the Executive Committee, have knowledge of a transaction that the Board did not share with the Superintendent or Cornwall officials?
