Obituaries: Edward Michael Flynn

 Edward Michael Flynn of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY entered into rest on Friday, July 14, 2017.

The son of the late John J. Flynn of County Dublin, Ireland and Agnes T. McHale of County Mayo, Ireland, he was born on December 8, 1932 in New Rochelle, NY.

Ed attended St. Gabriel’s Elementary School and Blessed Sacrament High School. It is here he earned the name ‘Flash Flynn’ and ‘Fast Eddie’ from his teammates, friends and family for his athletic accomplishments at Track and Field events. He graduated from Iona College in 1955 with a BS degree in Business. During college he served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. Upon graduation Ed joined the U.S. Army, serving for six years. Upon his discharge, he joined Sinclair Oil (now Exxon) and began his career in finance and human resources. Over the span of his career he worked for various companies. He retired in 1998 from the US Department of Defense.

In retirement Ed remained active in his community and church. Over the years he was a member of/volunteered with many groups and causes, especially: St. Thomas of Canterbury Church – Bingo, CYO, and Eucharistic Minister, Fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus, Commander/Past Commander of American Legion Post 353, member Ancient Order of Hibernians, member Greenwood Lake Gaelic Cultural Society/Project Children, volunteer for Homeless at Winter Haven, Newburgh, NY, and member of Carmelites, Chapter of St. Edna Stein, Middletown, NY.

Ed was an enthusiastic supporter of Army Athletics, especially the Men’s Ice Hockey team. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid runner long before it was a popular form of exercise. He easily talked to anyone and loved to tell a story and sing a song.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Brigid A. Daly; daughter Brigidanne Flynn of Castleton, NY; son Michael E. Flynn (Katherine) of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter Siobhan ‘Bonnie’ Reeder (Tom) of Hampton, NJ and grandchildren: Rachel, Olivia, Finn, Connor, Norah and Eleanor. He was predeceased by his three brothers.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 19 from 4-7pm at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 20 at 10am at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. Interment will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Ar dheis De’ go raibha anam.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Ed’s memory be made to the Newburgh Ministry, 9 Johnston Street, Newburgh, NY 12550.
